2009 - 2010 Section President

Michael Bower - ASCE Buffalo PresidentWelcome to the ASCE Buffalo Section Website. I am Michael D. Bower, P.E., President of the Buffalo Section for the 2009-2010 term. Along with 10 other Board of Directors, we volunteer our time to help guide and serve the Civil Engineers in the Western New York community. I hope you visit our website frequently, as we have many events planned for the upcoming year. This website will highlight these events and I hope you will join us.

In July, the Board of Directors identified goals for this year and we are excited to have already accomplished some of them. Please refer to our Goal Summary for more information.

WNY Construction Career Days
The Buffalo Section is looking for some help at our booth at WNY Construction Career Days to talk about Civil Engineering to high school students. The main time we need volunteers is between 10AM and 2PM on Wednesday October 7th and Thursday October 8th. The event is held at the Operating Engineers Local #17 Training Facility in Lakeview. Please email Athena Hutchins, ahutchins@nittec.org by Monday, October 5th, to sign up.

Shadow Program
The Buffalo Section, in conjunction with the Student Chapter at UB, is looking to continue the Shadow Program this fall. This program gives students an opportunity to see what civil engineers do. Please let 1 or 2 students shadow you for a morning, afternoon, or even a couple of hours. This can include showing them what your company does, what occurs during an average work day, and anything else you feel is relevant to helping them develop a better understanding of Civil Engineering.

The more students that this attracts to the field, and to ASCE, means that your company has a better chance to finding a good intern, or employee that will add to the Buffalo/WNY area. If you are interested in having students shadow you please email Athena Hutchins, ahutchins@nittec.org by October 16th. Please indicate your area of expertise, as we will line up students with a similar interest. We already have a list of students who are interested in participating in the program and we are looking for professionals to help out. The date of shadow will be at your convenience.

Re-Tree WNY
The Buffalo Section will be helping Re-Tree WNY to plant trees in the Town of Tonawanda on Saturday, November 7th. Re-Tree WNY is a group of WNY residents dedicated to re-forest every public area that was destroyed by the October 13th 2006, snowstorm. They are looking to plant several thousand trees this fall and the ASCE Buffalo Section is volunteering to help. Please email Kelly Pilarski, pilarskik@pbworld.com, by October 16th, to sign up. This is a new outreach event for the Buffalo Section and we are hoping to get a good turnout!

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions regarding events or activities, please contact me or any of the directors. We are always looking for the most beneficial way to serve the WNY civil engineering community and
your input is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
