The ASCE Buffalo Section is pleased to announce the 2010 ASCE Resume Review, to prepare the UB ASCE Student Chapter’s resumes for the combined ASCE Section meeting on Wednesday March 24th. Last year was the Buffalo Section’s first annual Student Resume Review which gave students a great opportunity to receive quality feedback on their resumes from many practicing engineers. The resumes will be included in the complimentary resume booklet provided by the students for the section meeting.
The ASCE Buffalo Younger Member Committee is looking for volunteers to review 3 or 4 resumes prior to presenting their feedback to their students on Tuesday March 16th, from 6:00 to 7:00pm at UB’s Ketter Hall Room 140. There is always a need for reviewers so please donate an hour of your time to review a few resumes even if you are not available on March 2nd. This is a great opportunity for you to meet graduating students and those looking for internships for the summer.
We are also looking for someone in a hiring position to say a few words at the beginning. This could be you, a boss, co-worker or HR rep from your company that would be willing to give 10 minutes of their time to the students. This short intro should include engineering specific resume basics and quick facts or advice for cover letters and interviews – 5-10 minutes max.
Please contact Kelly Pilarski, pilarskik@pbworld.com to sign up or if you have any questions.
The Buffalo Section is seeking nominations for the most outstanding Members or Fellows for Distinguished Membership, the highest recognition the Society may confer, second only to the title of ASCE National President. Candidates’ contributions have significantly impacted the Civil Engineering profession or the public in general.
Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2011 Distinguished Member Class. You can help an eminent engineer attain the Distinguished Member grade. Please include a few sentences about why they should be nominated to help start the nomination process. Please consider nominating a civil engineer for the Distinguished Member Class. Reply to Michael Bower, P.E., mbower@ravieng.com by March 3rd with your nominations.
You are invited to submit an article to the Leadership and Management in Engineering (LME) journal for a special issue focusing on the practical initiatives engineers and other major project stakeholders are introducing to achieve the outcomes presented in “Achieving the Vision for Civil Engineering in 2025: A Roadmap for the Profession.” Obtain a complimentary copy of "Vision 2025" here Vision 2025. National Engineers week is February 14th-20th, and ASCE is the National Chair for the event. The Buffalo Section is planning a special outreach event at the Galleria Mall on Saturday the 20th. The event is called Newspaper Bridge contest and is open to anyone who wishes to participate. The concept is to build a bridge in 15 minutes out of newspaper and a roll of tape. The bridge that holds the most weight wins a gift certificate. We are currently looking for volunteers and sponsors for the event and we hope you can help out. Please read the announcement for more details. This will be held concurrent with Mall Day activities and Pine Wood Derby Contest.

The Engineering Expressions Program, sponsored by the ASCE Buffalo Section, will be presented to the 5th and 6th grade students at Buffalo City Honors School on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, from 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Approximately 185 students will be introduced to engineering through four "hands on" workshops presented by about 25 volunteers. The workshops include Displays & Demonstrations, Engineering Drawings, Materials where students make concrete, and Structures where students build simple bridges and test their strength. Engineering expressions is in its 20th year and it has been presented to about 8,000 children.
We have always had a good experience working with the students at Buffalo City Honors School. The children are always attentive, interested, and they ask good questions. While the permanent school location is under renovation, the school is temporarily located on West Delevan between Chapin and Elmwood Streets, Buffalo, NY. If you would like to volunteer for the program, please call Irv Reinig, Chairperson, at (716) 681-2587 or email him at reinigtnt@verizon.net. No previous experience with the program is necessary.
