Ground Improvement - Technical Dinner

Wednesday, April 10, 2024 - 17:30 PM - Wednesday, April 10, 2024 - 20:30 PM

Column Supported Embankments Systems (CSES), utilizing Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC), are an ideal solution for the immediate support of fill walls and embankments for bearing capacity and settlement control. CSES have been employed by numerous DOTs across the United States as a cost-saving approach to traditional piling. Often, CSES use less materials than traditional piling due the load-sharing nature of the CSES with surrounding soils resulting in shallower, less robust elements. A case study will be presented that will describe and illustrate the use of CSES in the modernization of the intersection of I-70 and SR 51 in Belle Vernon, PA. Along with the CSES technique, wick drains were also used to control settlement for the proposed embankments. Four separate locations, two on ramps and two off ramps were modernized with these techniques, providing safer operating conditions for drivers.

The case study will discuss a load testing program that was performed prior to installation of the CSES and wick drains. Results of the test program will be included in the discussion. In addition, discussions regarding design, installation techniques, and in-field quality control of the CSES will be included. The ground improvement portion of the Penn DOT sponsored project was successfully completed in the Fall of 2023.
