G. Brooks Earnest Technical Lecture Award
In 1977, the Board of Directors of the Cleveland Section agreed to establish the G. Brooks Earnest Technical Lecture Award to express the Section's appreciation of the life-long services of G. Brooks Earnest. In addition, this Award commemorates the service he has given to the profession and especially his leadership and inspiration in the education of Engineers.
H. Kit Miyamoto, Ph.D., S.E., is the CEO and a structural engineer for Miyamoto International, Global Risk Miyamoto and non-profit organization, Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief. He is a Governor appointed California Seismic Safety Commissioner. Under his leadership, more than 12,000 projects have been successfully completed worldwide. Known for innovative engineering, Dr. Miyamoto works on many challenging projects that gain industry recognition, including the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations Excellence in Structural Engineering Award. Dr. Miyamoto specializes in high-performance earthquake engineering, seismic rehabilitation and retrofit, and disaster mitigation, response, and reconstruction.
Dr. Miyamoto works on critical projects, and is an expert consultant to the World Bank on the seismic risk mitigation project for 2,000 schools in Istanbul, Turkey. He worked with the government of Haiti, the United Nations, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and various nongovernmental organizations to conduct seismic assessments of more than 400,000 earthquake-damaged structures in that country. Dr. Miyamoto and this coalition are currently implementing the repair and strengthening of more than 120,000 damaged Haitian buildings. He is also involved with post-disaster reconstruction in New Zealand and natural disaster risk reduction in Bangkok.
A past director for the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC), Dr. Miyamoto is an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Fellow, and he has served on many code-writing organizations, including ASCE 7 Seismic Task Committee. He was also an adjunct professor at California State University. Dr. Miyamoto holds graduate degrees from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and California State University, Sacramento.
Dr. Miyamoto has published more than 100 technical papers and is a frequent international speaker on disaster issues. He has been featured by many international media organizations, including CNN, NBC, the Discovery Channel, the New York Times, and Rolling Stone.
