Orchard STEM School Volunteering - BIKE RODEO

Friday, April 26, 2019 - 2:00pm to 3:30pm

Volunteers needed!

This year’s theme is ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION, and the Bike Rodeo is the crowning event! Each student will receive a bicycle helmet and bicycle lock, purchased by the ASCE Cleveland Section thanks to a generous grant from Dominion Energy.

Staff from the Ohio City Bicycle Co-op will bring 30 bicycles for students to use at the bike rodeo, to be held in the gym. The bike rodeo introduces basic traffic concepts and bike-handling skills, with a chance to practice them in a car-free setting. Students learn the meaning of “yield” and “right of way” (and how to watch out for others who haven’t!). They also practice steering around obstacles, stopping and starting safely and efficiently, and scanning for road hazards and other traffic around them. All are based on the League of American Bicyclists’ Traffic Skills curriculum.
