Topic: Sunnyside Canal Improvement Project
The presentation will focus on the $32.6 million Sunnyside Canal Improvement Project (SCIP) that is now nearly complete, which will save approximately 30,000 acre-feet of water each year. The project includes replacement of 30 water level control structures on the 60-mile long Sunnyside Canal, construction of 3 reregulation reservoirs, and an automated control system (SCADA).
About the Speaker(s):
Dick Haapala - Dick is an agricultural engineer working in Yakima for CH2M HILL for the past 32 years. He graduated from the University of California, Davis with a degree in Irrigation Science, served in the US Army Corps of Engineers in Vietnam, worked for a large irrigation district in California, and then joined CH2M HILL. Most of his work has been modernization and repair work for irrigation districts in central Washington with a few foreign country assignments. Two trips to Egypt and one to Sri Lanka. Dick is currently working on one project in Haiti and one in Brazil.
Don Schramm, PE - Don is a Professional Engineer currently working under contract as an Engineer for the Sunnyside Division Board of Control focusing on water conservation projects. Don graduated from WSU with a degree in civil engineering. He worked as a Transportation Engineer for WSDOT and as a Hydraulics Engineer for the Washington State Department of Ecology. Don then became the District Engineer for the Roza Irrigation District, later becoming the Chief Hydrologist for the US Bureau of Reclamation, Yakima office. Don has been the Assistant Manager of Engineering for the Sunnyside Valley Irrigation District until his recent transition to the Sunnyside Division Board of Control. |
