October Meeting Notice
Tuesday,
October 24, 2006 at 6:00 PM
at the office of Alt & Witzig Engineering,
Inc.
4105 West 99th Street, Carmel, Indiana
TOPIC:
“ Tunneling Through Glacial Till with an Earth Pressure Balance
Shield for the Construction of the CEP to IMC Utility Tunnel at
IIA” to be presented by:
Mr. Gil Garcia – Consultant & President, GilCo
Group, Inc.,
Indianapolis, IN Ph.D.
Candidate - Colorado School
of Mines, Golden, CO
Ms. Liza Dwyre, P.E. - Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc.
BRIEF SUMMARY:
As part of the
current expansion of the Indianapolis International Airport (IIA), a 9-ft
diameter tunnel approximately 2,016 ft long is under construction below an
active runway and two taxiways. Construction required the use of an earth
pressure balance (EPB)
shield, steel liner plates, a unique annulus backfill grout
mix, and
state-of-the-art soil conditioning to minimize surface settlement and
potential damage to
the runway, taxiways, and underground structures.
Following a social
time including food and drinks, we will briefly discuss current and future
activities and allow members to ask questions or provide comments concerning
the group. Please plan to join your fellow geotechnical engineering
professionals for an informative presentation.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Wigger.,
P.E., Chair
