Report by
Mark Valenzuela
Interim Student Chapter
Advisor
November 2005
Greetings from the
ASCE student chapter at the University of Evansville! Our officers this year
are: Josh Culver, President, Drew Flamion, Vice-President, Amanda Ranck,
Secretary, Michael Cook, Treasurer, Larry Summers, Historian, and Tyler
Tackett, Concrete Canoe Project Manager. Faculty Advisor Chris Gwaltney is
on sabbatical leave.
The chapter held its first meeting Monday night, September 12th, to welcome
back students and introduce freshmen to all of the exciting activities of
the new year. Each officer gave a review of activities from the previous
year such as holding the annual Balsawood Bridge competition held at
Eastland Mall, going to the Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders in Orlando,
FL, taking a field trip to the new Deaconess Hospital, and having guest
speakers like Liz Kerr who talked about her grad school research.
On top of all of that students competed in the Great Lakes Regional
conference and the concrete canoe team went to the national competition and
placed sixth in the nation. All in all it was a busy year and the chapter
was rewarded with a Certificate of Commendation from ASCE National
Headquarters, placing it among the top 25 student chapters in the country.
In addition to this honor, Civil Engineering professors Chris Gwaltney and
Mark Valenzuela received certificates of commendation from ASCE for their
role as faculty advisors.
New activities are off to a good start. Students are hard at work on the
steel sculpture donated by CIVES Steel. The foundation was finished in late
September and we expect most of the work to be completed by the end of this
semester. A picnic is being planned for the middle of October and the
concrete canoe team has been meeting regularly. With a good freshman class,
the students are looking forward to carrying on a fine ASCE tradition at UE.
