Report by Amanda Cope
Outgoing Student Chapter Vice President

September 2006

The ASCE Student Chapter at Tri-State University is anticipating a school year filled with new design projects, guest speakers, and exceptional networking opportunities with working engineers.  Our organization is busy preparing for the annual fall cookout, which brings together all civil engineering students.  Tri-State has seen a large increased in enrollment with nearly 35 freshman civil engineering students.  We are coordinating our fall cookout with the Northeast Indiana Branch ASCE leader to extend the gathering to all ASCE members in the area.

Tri-State University has hired a new structural professor, Dr. Douglas Schmucker.  His distinguished education and teaching experience will contribute to improving all civil engineering organizations.  Dr. Schmucker has new innovative ideas to contribute to the student design projects.  These ideas include a new mold design and utilizing local organizations to enhance the canoe design.  With Dr. Schmucker’s guidance, our concrete canoe will become more competitive at the national level.  Our chapter is also discussing the feasibility of competing in the steel bridge project.  With the large civil engineering enrollment, two student projects have become feasible this year.

As always, various professionals will be coming to campus to speak about a variety of engineering topics.  Our student chapter will also be involved in the annual Design Expo held at Tri-State University.  Our ASCE chapter is coordinating with Chi Epsilon to conduct joint activities.  This coordination of organizations will allow more resources available to promote civil engineering.  Other activities planned for this semester include a school presentation to raise interest in civil engineering and planning activities during National Engineering Week.  Our chapter believes in the importance of vocalizing our desire to become engineers and exposing other students and community residents in the vast field of civil engineering.
