November 2005

The Valparaiso University Chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers has another ambitious year ahead of us!

Our chapter is finishing up work on the Student Bridge Project, which involved bringing a 32-foot long steel truss bridge back to campus. We also installed a 30-foot long prefabricated foot bridge at the site where we removed the Student Bridge from. The Student Bridge dates back to the 1860s and has many traditions and memories associated with it. As students, we have been involved in all aspects of the process, from planning and presenting to the design and construction of this project. The bridge is set to be dedicated October 8, 2005, and marks the triumphant end of two solid years of work. More information on the project can be found at: http://www.valpo.edu/student/asce/bridge

Also in the 2005-2006 school year, our VU ASCE Chapter is planning to design and build a steel bridge to enter in the AISC Steel Bridge Competition. Preparations for the competition have already begun. Our monthly chapter meetings are complemented with social activities such as our semi-annual Kick-Off Cook Out, bowling nights, and service activities, through which we strive to connect with the community around us. We also bring in outside speakers to present on topics ranging from life after graduation to the latest developments in concrete.

Our chapter has been off to a great start this year, and we are looking forward to the rest of the year!
