PROGRAM:

Application of Cast-in-Place Displacement Piles in the Mid-Western United States

Presented by: Willie M. NeSmith, P.E., Chief Geotechnical Engineer for Berkel and Company Contractors

When Geotechnical Engineers are first exposed to the concept of cast-in-place displacement piles, the tendency is to think of application in coastal plain settings, and particularly in Florida because "it’s all sand down there". While the Atlantic Coastal Plain is an attractive area for this pile type, a significant portion of the projects executed by Berkel & Company have been in (relatively) recent alluvial deposits adjacent to major rivers. This presentation includes a brief overview of the installation of augered, pressure-grouted displacement piles, and focuses on application of the process in alluvial profiles in the mid-western United States. The concept of Installation Effort as a control method for installation is also discussed.

Willie is the Chief Geotechnical Engineer for Berkel & Company Contractors. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1974, and for the following 25 years was a consulting Geotechnical Engineer, working on projects in the United States, the Middle East, and Africa. Willie began to specialize in cast-in-place deep foundations in 1990, and joined Berkel & Company in 1999, after serving as a consultant for implementation of their displacement pile system. He is a leading authority on the design and installation of cast-in-place displacement piles in the United States, having designed or evaluated over 100 displacement pile projects nationwide. Willie is a member of the DFI ACIP Pile Committee, and is the current chairman of the newly formed Cast-In-Place Displacement pile subcommittee. He is also a member of the Deep Foundations Committee of the ASCE Geo-Institute.

Eligible for 1.0 Professional Development Hour (PDH) for attending.
