MACKINAC SCHOLARSHIP

What is the Mackinac Scholarship?

The Mackinac Scholarship is a new, two-year scholarship grant given by ASCE's Michigan Section to a Civil Engineering student (Michigan resident) entering his or her junior year of study at an ABET-accredited college or university. The inaugural Mackinac Scholar will be selected in September.

Why call it the Mackinac Scholarship?

The ASCE Michigan section established the Mackinac Scholarship for two reasons:
1. To continue to honor the Mackinac Bridge as Michigan's #1 Civil Engineering Project of the 20th Century as voted by the ASCE Michigan Section's membership in 1999.
2. To give something back to the profession in a substantial and lasting way and to encourage the continuing practice of the Civil Engineering profession.

What is a Mackinac Scholarship worth?

The ASCE Michigan Section currently plans to award $2,500 to each Mackinac Scholar at the beginning of their junior year, and another $2,500 at the beginning of their senior year for a total $5,000 award. A new Mackinac Scholar will be selected each year.

What are the qualifications for becoming a Mackinac Scholar?

First, the applicant must be a Michigan resident and attending an ABET-accredited college or university offering a major in Civil Engineering. Next, applications are considered only from students entering their junior year of study. Finally, the committee considers academic credentials, campus involvement, summer work, and financial need in determining the recipient of the Mackinac Scholarship. See the application for more information.

How is the Mackinac Scholarship funded?
Or, what happens to my donation?

The Mackinac Scholarship Fund was established by ASCE's Michigan Section in late 2000. It is the ASCE Michigan Section's goal to raise over $100,000 to endow the Mackinac Scholarship Fund. The fund is comprised of donations made by Civil Engineers, Civil Engineering firms, and friends of the Mackinac Bridge and the Civil Engineering profession. As an endowed fund, the principal in the fund will never be used to pay for scholarships or expenses. Only the earnings of the fund will be used for scholarships. As such, it is the intention of the ASCE Michigan Section to award Mackinac Scholarships in perpetuity.

How do you plan to raise $100,000 to endow the Mackinac Scholarship?

The ASCE Michigan Section is currently involved in the 'kick-off' portion of our fund-raising campaign. In this phase, we have identified a number of leading Civil Engineers, engineering firms and friends we believe are both capable of and interested in committing $1,000 each to the Mackinac Scholarship Fund. Our goal in this phase is to receive $1,000 commitments from at least 100 individuals, firms and friends. As of May 15, 2001, we have raised $60,000. This portion of the fund drive will end on December 1, 2001. On December 1, 2001 we plan to offer participation in the fund drive to each of the 2,300 ASCE Michigan Section members. Participation levels will include opportunities for donations at the $1,000 level and above as well as $25, $50, $100, $250 and $500 commitments. Following the general offering to our membership, there are a number of other groups who will be given an opportunity to participate in funding the Mackinac Scholarship.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes, your donation is tax deductible because the ASCE Michigan Section is an IRS 501 (c) 3 organization. What do I get for my donation? The ASCE Michigan Section is offering a wonderful gift for all donors giving at levels of $100 and above. The donor gift is a limited edition, commemorative print of the Mackinac Bridge by renowned artist Craig Holmes that was specially commissioned for Mackinac Scholarship donors. Founders ($1,000) and above will receive a framed print, signed by the artist and numbered in the #1 to #150 (of 999) series. All other donors will receive the print (unframed), and the numbered series will correspond to the gift level.
