And just like that the summer is over and the kids are back to school. The Mohawk-Hudson Section has been busy recently and has more events planned for the fall. Let's take a look back on what we have done this summer and what is coming up.
The 17th Annual Mohawk-Hudson Section Student Scholarship Benefit Golf Outing was held on July 22, 2016, and had another great turnout and was able to successfully fund the student scholarship awards. Please read about it below and stay tuned for next year's event. Please contact our Golf Chair, Walter Lippmann, for more information on sponsoring or playing in the tournament.
2016 ASCE Summer Outing - Tri-City Valley Cats
On August 19th, the Section hosted the 8th Annual Summer Outing event at Joe Bruno Stadium to watch the Tri-City Valley Cats take on the Aberdeen IronBirds. Over 40 members of our section and their families joined together at the event. Although the Valley Cats lost 4-7, everyone had a great time and enjoyed the game.
Leo Fioravanti represented out Section at a press conference to kick off the Capital District Future City Competition on September 7th with civil engineer and Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. The Future City Competition challenges students in grades six through eight to design their ideas for cities of the future, and we were able to share our vision for this year's theme "The Power of Public Space". Our Section is proud to be a continuing sponsor for this important program as it enters its 25th year.
Important news from ASCE National and Region 1 came from this year's NYS Council Meeting Region 1 Assembly held September 10th in Albany. The NYS Council elected to create a committee to develop the next ASCE NY State Infrastructure Report Card and maintain the momentum from last year's successful Report Card launch. Two important resources now available to New York ASCE Members are the Council's website at http://www.ascenyscouncil.org and the PDH approved presentations for the New York State Report Card. This year, ASCE is also focusing on two national goals: Raising the Bar and the Grand Challenge. Raising the Bar is the continuing mission to raise the standards of the civil engineering profession, and the Grand Challenge for ASCE is to reduce the life cycle cost of infrastructure in the U.S. by 50% by 2025.
The Section has some exciting events coming up this fall as well. SEI's Mohawk-Hudson Chapter will host their 6th Annual SEI Structures Day on October 19, 2016, at The Italian American Community Center. 4 PDH credits will be available. Please contact Jeffrey Bak at firstname.lastname@example.org for more details or click on the link below. The ASCE Mohawk-Hudson Section - Capital Region Geotechnical Symposium will be held November 18, 2016 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. A full day of seminars will be offered. Please contact Gary Dale at email@example.com for more information or click on the link below. In addition, as the holidays roll around, we will be hosting our annual Toys for Tots event. Be on the lookout for more information regarding these events.
Finally, we will be unveiling our new Mohawk-Hudson Section website this fall. It will offer a single source for all your Section and ASCE information, and will be updated with our most recent information once it goes live.
We are always looking for ways to make the ASCE Mohawk-Hudson Section better for our members. Please contact any board member, committee chair, or technical group/institute chair for more information or if you are interested in getting involved.
Thank you and I look forward to seeing you at some of our upcoming events.
