Construction season is now in full swing, and so are the Mohawk-Hudson Section’s endeavors to progress and advance the profession of civil engineering through The American Society of Civil Engineers’ strategic initiatives. Please join us at our upcoming events to celebrate our accomplishments and continue to push civil engineering to new limits.
This year’s Annual Dinner Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 03rd, at Wolfs 1-11 in Colonie, NY. The evening will include dinner and a PDH presentation on the challenges of the design and permitting process of Mohawk Harbor in Schenectady, NY. When complete, the Mohawk Harbor will consist of over 1 million square feet including apartments, condominiums, townhouses, hotels, retail/dining, office space, and the Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady. Bergmann Associates and Dente Engineering were retained to perform the design of the bulkhead wall for the harbor adjacent to the development. Due to soft native soils and constrained site conditions, the harbor wall used a king pile system with specially shaped H piles and interlocking steel sheets. Design was further complicated by the close proximity of buildings and water level fluctuations on the river and in the harbor. Construction of the harbor occurred during the fall and winter of 2015-2016. The harbor is now complete allowing boat traffic on the Erie Canal to visit the development. Mohawk Harbor, From Brownfield to Waterfront Destination, will be presented by Steven Boisvert, PE, and Greg Johnson, PE, from Bergmann Associates, and Fred Dente, PE, from Dente Engineering.
The Annual Dinner Meeting will also be a time to recognize our fellow peers, both professional and students, as the Mohawk-Hudson Section will present awards for Engineer of the Year, Young Engineer of the Year, and Meritorious Service, as well as recognize our Student Chapters and Student Chapter Award Winners. The annual student scholarship will also be presented to this year’s winner, who is a graduating high school senior seeking to continue their education with a desire to become a practicing civil engineer.
If you have not yet registered for the Annual Dinner Meeting, please visit http://sections.asce.org/mohawk-hudson/node/39 to register now!
We are also pleased to announce that the Mohawk-Hudson Section, in partnership with ACEC NY and Assemblymember Angelo Santabarbara’s Office, will be screening Dream Big: Engineering Our World on April 25th at Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady. “All around the world, engineers are pushing the limits of ingenuity and innovation in unexpected, imaginative, and amazing ways. Dream Big: Engineering Our World, a giant-screen film about engineering, will take viewers on a journey of discovery from the world’s tallest building to a bridge higher than the clouds. Along the way, the audience will witness how today’s engineers are shaping the world of tomorrow.” The Section has a select number of seats available to members and/or students who may be interested in attending. Please contact Paul Byrd at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or to request tickets. Tickets will go fast!
