The end of the year is time to both look back and give thanks and to look forward to what is to come. The Mohawk-Hudson Section is proud to support its members in their civil engineering endeavors and accomplishments, and looks forward to continuing to do so.
 
In just the last month, the Mohawk-Hudson Section has continued to contribute to the civil engineering community. The Structural Engineering Institute's Mohawk-Hudson Chapter held their 6th annual Structures Date on October 19th. Please read about it below and stay tuned for more SEI events in the future from SEI Chair Paul Byrd ([email protected]). The Section organized a guided tour of the construction of the Rivers Casino & Resort at Mohawk Harbor in Schenectady on October 26th, which was very engaging for the members that attended. Thanks to Vice President Leo Fioravanti for his planning and coordination. Also, our Younger Member Group held another successful Networking Happy Hour Event last Thursday. It was a great opportunity to connect and network with fellow engineers in the Capital District, and a good time was had by all in attendance. Thanks to Younger Member Group Chair Ted Ranslow for organizing the event.
 
Looking forward, the Mohawk-Hudson Section looks to continue to grow, support, and improve the profession of civil engineering. The ASCE Mohawk-Hudson Section - Capital Region Geotechnical Symposium will be held November 18th at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. A full day of seminars will be offered, and the event looks to be another great success. Please contact Gary Dale ([email protected]) for more information. The Mohawk-Hudson Section and RPI and HVCC Student Chapters will once again kick off the holiday season with our annual Toys for Tots event at Brown's Brewing Company on December 6th. Please read about it below and consider joining us for this event. After the holidays, the Capital District Future City regional competition will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Proctors Theater in Schenectady. The Section is proud to be a continuing sponsor for this event and invest in the future of civil engineering as these 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are challenged to Envision Urban Public Spaces of Tomorrow with this year's theme "The Power of Public Space".
 
There are also events and issues at the national level that affect our engineering community. Although the election was tumultuous, the promise of infrastructure investments is an opportunity that should be supported, and ties into the Grand Challenge issued by ASCE to "significantly enhance the performance and value of infrastructure projects over their life cycles by 2025 and foster the optimization of infrastructure investments for society". Excitement is also building towards the release of the giant screen movie Dream Big: Engineering Our World, which is expected to open worldwide in February 2017 during our celebration of Engineers Week.
 
The Mohawk-Hudson Section is also proud to announce that the new Section website is live at http://sections.asce.org/mohawk-hudson/. Please visit and bookmark the newly updated website and check back often for updates. Thanks to Chris Einig for leading this effort.

We design systems to support the entire facility including many special systems for industrial clients. We are experts in the design of buildings and have 12 Registered Professional Engineers on staff.
We have a significant workload of primarily Institutional and Industrial clients. We have a large backlog of work and need help to meet deadlines. Several large projects are in the beginning stages of design. We are looking for a Structural Engineering Group Leader to lead a team to design structural systems for new and old buildings built of steel, concrete, masonry or wood and industrial platforms and supports. This engineer will manage the design and the employees on a mix of projects. We will offer a very aggressive salary for the right candidate.

ASCE Mohawk-Hudson Section Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Celebrates their 6th Annual Structures Day
 
The Mohawk-Hudson branch of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) hosted their 6th annual Structures Day conference on Wednesday, October 19th at the Italian-American Center in Albany, NY. Among the fifty in attendance were engineers, contractors, and general interest groups representing vertical and horizontal infrastructure sectors within the Capitol Region. Attending guests were presented with four seminars for CEU's/PDH's from professionals within the engineering community. Topics presented were The Amsterdam Bridge (R.Cisneros, High Steel), Masonry Beams (D.Biggs, PE, SE, F.SEI, Biggs Consulting Engineering), Segmental Retaining Walls (R.Miller, Allan Block Corp.), and ASCE 7-10 Wind Loads (Dr. C. Letchford, D.Phil, NPER, CPEng, F.SEI, F.ASCE, F.IEAust., Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute).
SEI also presented their annual SEI Awards for outstanding projects of the year. Awards that were presented at Structures Day were for Bridge Structures (Greenman-Pedersen, Inc.), Studies/Investigations (The Chazen Companies), and Other Structures (Ryan-Biggs Clark Davis, w/honorable mention to M.J. Engineering & Land Surveying, P.C.).
Chair Paul M. Byrd, E.I.T. and Chair Elect Emily Konick, E.I.T. were sworn in upon the conclusion of the Awards ceremony. We wish them the best of luck in their new roles.
Paul M. Byrd, E.I.T. is a structural designer at Hill- Engineers, Architects, Planners, Inc. located in Dalton, Massachusetts. Paul is an Associate Member of ASCE and Corresponding member of The Masonry Society's TMS 402/602 Committee, as well as an appointed member of the City of Pittsfield's Historical Commission. Paul was a graduate of Clarkson University with a Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering.
Emily Konick is an assistant project engineer in the Structural/Geotechnical Group at the Chazen Companies located in Troy, NY. Emily recently received her bachelors and masters degrees in civil and structural engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in May of this year. Some recent adventures have included the RPI Bedford traveling workshop to London in June of this year, and the decision to volunteer for chair-elect of the local SEI Chapter.
