The Mid-Hudson Society of Women Engineers (SWE) hosted a tour of the historic Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge and a dinner presentation on March 24th where Fred Schaeffer, Walkway Chairman, explained the history of the bridge and its new future role as the Walkway over the Hudson.
Fred noted that the bridge was the longest in the world, at 6,767 feet, when it opened in 1888. It took 3-years to construct. The top of the bridge deck is 212 feet above the water. It connected New England with the Mid-We
