Other News to Note: (from the Structural Engineering Institute web, By James A. Rossberg, PE, Director, Structural Engineer Institute)

“NCEES - In case you’ve not heard, at their summer meeting the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) approved a modification to their model law expanding the educational requirement for licensure.

The modification, which will take effect in 2015, requires the attainment of either a master’s degree in engineering or 30 additional credits in either graduate or upper-level undergraduate courses from approved course providers. Simply put, this is a huge step forward and you can learn more of the details from the front page article of the October issue of ASCE News.  Moving this change to the model law forward into legislation in each state is going to take a tremendous effort on all of our parts. We’re going to need to step forward and, like it or not, become active in communicating our support of this change to the licensing boards and to the legislatures as they undertake its adoption.

There is still work going on within NCEES to define some of the particular details associated with this change but recognize that this is a bold and dramatic step by NCEES and they, and the champions of ASCE Policy 465, deserve our congratulations and help in making the implementation complete.”

The United States Military Academy ASCE Student Chapter has been selected by the Committee on Student Activities  of the American Society of Civil Engineers to receive the 2007 Robert Ridgway Student Chapter Award.

The award citation will read: “For excellence in the effective and meritorious conduct of its affairs as a Student Chapter of ASCE through the ability and professional diligence of the Chapter officers, members and faculty advisors.”

In selecting the chapter for this award, the committee particularly noted the Chapter’s exemplary activities and public service.  The award was established to promote excellence among Student Chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers.  Isabel L. Ridgway endowed this award in honor of her husband, Robert Ridgway, Past President, ASCE.  It was officially instituted by action of the Board of Direction in May 1965.

The award is made annually to the single most outstanding Student Chapter of ASCE.  There are currently 231 active Student Chapters in the United States.  The award is given for the Chapter’s activities and work during calendar year 2006.

The ASCE Student Chapter at USMA was chartered in 1926 and is currently know as the Civil and Military Engineer Club, a DCA academic club sponsored by the Department of Civil & Mechanical Engineering.  The club serves as the student chapter for both ASCE and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME).  The club has a history of excellence, having won the award for the best Student Chapter in the Northeast for the past 3 years and being a finalist for the Ridgway award for two of the past three years.

This is the first time USMA has received the Ridgway award.  The Club is generously sported by the Samuel W. Pinnell Endowment, AOG gift funds through the Office of the Dean, ASCE, the Department of Civil & Mechanical Engineering, and The Mohawk-Hudson Section of ASCE.

The Club Officers responsible for leading the Chapter during 2006, were president David Flaherty, 07, A-3, and Vice Presidents Charles Dossett, 07, B-2, Todd Mainwaring, 07, D-2, Kyle Murray, 07, B-3, Daniel Long, 07, H-1, Alfredo Volio, 07, E-3, and Joe Zdaniewicz, 07, D-2.

The award will be presented by an official from ASCE on 11 May 2007 in Arnold Auditorium at 1600 hours (4 PM), with a reception to follow in the CME Conference Room.
