One First Union center is located in the heart of Charlotte's central business district and is the headquarters facility for First Union Corporation, one of the ten largest banking institutions in the United States.  One First Union Center is the hub of a massive urban complex known as First Union Center which covers more than two full city blocks and includes adjacent office buildings of 30, 12 and 5 stories, a 422 room Westin Hotel, a large indoor atrium used for public entertainment, and an expansive outdoor plaza.  One First Union consists of a 43 story, multi-tenant office tower rising 588 feet above street level.

One First Union Center itself consists of a 42-story multi-tenant office tower with approximately 972,427 rentable square feet (including an 8-story annex of contiguous space which primarily houses data processing operations for First Union), an underground 7-level 1100 car parking garage, and an outdoor plaza with extensive landscaping, a 50-foot clock tower, water features, artwork and public seating.  The building connects to other building in the complex via an overstreet bridge and underground tunnel.  Featured amenities include two levels of service retail shops, a 50,000 square foot YMCA fitness center, and an executive dining facility located on the 41st floor.  When it opened in 1988, One First Union Center was the tallest building in the Southeast.  Today, its striking postmodern architecture, barrel-vaulted roofline, and rose-colored granite exterior make is one of Charlotte's most prominent landmarks.

First Union occupies more than 60% of the building. However, One First Union Center is home to more than fifty of Charlotte's most prominent businesses.  The First Union corporate headquarters, located on floors 40-42, is equipped with a private dining facility, outdoor terraces, private elevators between floors, and a three-story atrium with a marble monumental staircase.  This area is frequently used for hosting some of the city's most notable civic and charity functions.  Other featured uses include First Union's 25,000 square foot trading floor fashioned after Wall Street's investment houses, a 13,000 square foot banking lobby and an elegant retail investment center, both located on the ground floor.
