Route 66 Designated as an ASCE Historic Civil Engineering Landmark
The ASCE New Mexico Section contributed to the recent designation of U.S. Route 66 as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark under ASCE’s program recognizing projects of lasting engineering and societal value. The program recognizes historically significant local, national, and international civil engineering projects, structures, and sites.
This designation celebrates Route 66’s engineering legacy and cultural impact, including the route's realignment through central New Mexico, an important milestone in mid-20th-century highway design. Our Section was represented in the multi-state nomination effort by Dr. Roger Zimmerman, whose involvement was instrumental in the research, documentation, and coordination of this recognition.
