ASCE Lehigh Valley Section - History & Heritage: The Pont du Gard (1 PDH)

Event From Date
Wednesday, January 27, 2021 - 12:00 PM

During this websinar, Ann Tomalavage, PE, PMP, M.ASCE, will share her love of the Pont du Gard. "Qu'est-ce que c'est le Pont du Gard?" you ask. It is a bridge that is (the most interesting) part of a Roman aqueduct built in the 1st century AD to carry water over 31 miles to the Roman city of Nemausus (Nîmes) in Southern France. It is the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges. During our hour together, we'll put ourselves in the sandals of a Roman engineer and learn about the challenges the builders faced, one of which was beheading by the Emperor. Although it is no longer in use as an aqueduct, the Pont du Gard is still standing after nearly 2,000 years. Way to go, Romans! It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. It is one of the Top 5 tourist destinations in France, along with the Eiffel Tower (another engineering achievement). The Pont du Gard draws more than a million vistors every year.
