North Branch September Meeting

Wednesday, September 18, 2019 - 06:00 PM

Gina Austin, Project Engineer with the City of Bellingham Parks Development Division, will present highlights of the design, permitting, and construction of Waypoint, the city’s first park development on the former industrial waterfront site in Bellingham. The old Georgia Pacific (GP) site in Bellingham is approximately 130 acres and has been closed since 2007 when it was acquired by the Port of Bellingham. The former Ecology cleanup site was contaminated from years of industrial activities. The port completed an environmental remediation of the site, which opened up the area for redevelopment. The 1.7-acre Waypoint Park is located on the northwest corner of the GP site adjacent to the Whatcom Creek Waterway. The park features a beach connecting Whatcom Waterway to the mainland, a play area, meandering paths with seating, an over-water pier, and the 32-foot-diameter art piece known as “Waypoint,” the park’s namesake. This presentation will be packed with pictures and include successes and lessons learned from this award-winning, $4.8M development project.
