The infrastructure of Wisconsin is the backbone, the crucial element, that supports the economic vitality and, in a very real sense, the physical health of our citizens.
We often think of infrastructure as the roads and bridges that we use to travel safely from place to place. Certainly, these are important parts of our infrastructure. But what would our daily lives be like without an adequate supply of clean drinking water? How attractive would Wisconsin’s rivers and lakes be if we did not provide wastewater treatment or control stormwater run-off? How can we encourage economic growth without the energy to heat, cool and light our homes, offices, and factories? Can we get the most out of our children’s education if the school facilities are poorly maintained?
Infrastructure is all around us. We use it and are affected by it every single day. The condition of our infrastructure directly impacts all of us.
This second Report Card on the Infrastructure of Wisconsin is published for the purpose of raising public awareness of the many issues and decisions that are facing Wisconsin citizens as we strive to maintain and improve our infrastructure. The grades are intended to be an objective measure of the present condition of our infrastructure. We believe the discussion of the issues in this report will lead to a greater understanding of the current and future needs of our state. Our goal is to help the decision makers in our communities and in our legislature formulate policies and provide the necessary funding to address the infrastructure needs of Wisconsin.
