SR 30 Emergency Landslide Repair, A Geotechnical Perspective

Wednesday, February 25, 2026 - 17:30 PM

On April 7, 2018, a significant landslide resulted in the closure of Pennsylvania State Route 30 in Allegheny County. The route is a principal artery to Pittsburgh and supports more than 30,000 vehicles per day. The slide demolished one apartment building, severely damaged another, and impacted a single-family home.

GFT Infrastructure, Inc. prepared a comprehensive design package in just 10 days to allow PennDOT to bid and construct a landslide repair, which included landslide excavation and construction of a 400-foot-long anchored soldier pile and lagging retaining wall.

This presentation will focus on the geotechnical aspects of the project, providing attendees with information regarding the process followed to expedite the schedule, as well as discussing the significant cooperation that occurred between owner, engineer and construction contractor to minimize the impacts of the landslide.  In total, the roadway was only out of service for 80 days.
