about us

Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) represents more than 140,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide and is America's oldest national engineering society.

Mission

Provide essential value to our members and partners, advance civil engineering, and serve the public good.

In carrying out that mission, ASCE:

Publications

ASCE is the world's largest publisher of civil engineering information ¡V producing more than 50,000 pages in 2000. The Society publishes the monthly magazine Civil Engineering, a monthly newspaper ASCE news, the quarterly Geo-Strata for the Geo-Institute, the annual ASCE calendar, 28 technical and professional journals (available in print, CD-ROM and on the Internet), and a variety of books including acquired titles, conference proceedings, committee reports, manuals of practice, standards and monographs. The 93,000-entry Civil Engineering Database is available, along with many other resources for practicing civil engineers including a complete catalog of ASCE publications.

Codes and Standards

To ensure safer buildings, water systems and other civil engineering works, ASCE develops technical codes and standards that often are adopted by federal, state and local governments. For example, ASCE's national standard for building loads (ASCE 7) is part of the three major U.S. model codes.

Internationality

To encourage greater information sharing among civil engineers around the globe, ASCE has signed 67 international agreements of cooperation with sister societies. The Society also serves members in 153 nations and maintains nine Sections, one Branch and 15 Groups in 25 countries.

The Greater China Section

With three years of preparation, the ASCE Greater China Section was established on 5 November 2019, on the strong basis of the ASCE Hong Kong Section. The Greater China Section Hong Kong Section is the local Section of ASCE to which ASCE members in Greater China Region belong. It includes engineers from different branches of Civil Engineering, including but not limited to structural, geotechnical, construction, environmental, materials, water resources, etc. The ASCE Hong Kong International Group (the Group) held its Inaugural General Meeting on 25 July 1997. As a result of its successful operation, the Group was upgraded as a Section by the ASCE Board of Direction on 18 October 1998. In April 2001, the Hong Kong Section received the Award of Merit from the ASCE Headquarters in recognition of its outstanding performance in 2000. The ASCE Hong Kong Section was renamed to the ASCE Greater China Section in the Annual General Meeting on 5 November 2019. The ASCE Greater China Section was registered with the Hong Kong Government Licensing Office under the Business Registration Ordinance on 30 January 2019.
