Engineering Career

Growing up I was always fascinated by construction.  I was good in math and science, so I gravitated to engineering, and civil in particular, since it seemed to have the most variety.

I found bridges and highways to be my main area of interest.  This led me to a specialization in transportation engineering, which has included construction administration of highways and bridges, highway design, traffic engineering, and multi-modal facility planning and design.  I have been fortunate to have participated in projects from Maine to California, as well as overseas.

I began my career working for HNTB in Maine as an assistant engineer assigned to the construction oversight staff for the initial widening of the Maine Turnpike from York towards Wells in 1973.  From there I was relocated to Richmond, Virginia where I was part of the construction oversight staff for the Richmond Downtown Expressway.  After this Project was completed I moved to HNTB’s Baton Rouge, Louisiana design office where I began my highway design career.
I returned to Maine in 1977 to work for Wright-Pierce in their Civil Engineering Department.  In 9 years there I grew professionally to run the Civil Engineering Department and manage my first large transportation project – the redesign of the Tukey’s Bridge Interchange on I-295 in Portland.  This project was my introduction to T. Y. Lin International.

When T. Y. Lin purchased Hunter-Ballew Associates in Falmouth, I joined their staff as a Senior Project Manager.  I soon found myself managing the environmental documents associated with the Donald Carter Memorial Bridge in Waterville and the Casco Bay Bridge in Portland.  As my technical and managerial experience grew I was given additional project responsibilities outside Maine for T. Y. Lin’s East Coast operations, which included offices in Virginia and Florida.  I became office manager for the Maine office, and subsequently New England Regional Manager when the firm established an office in Boston for its work on the Central Artery.
In 1999 I joined Sebago Technics as the Vice President of Transportation Services – a new position for this locally based Maine firm.  In my 17 years to date in this position, I have been successful in creating a first class transportation engineering staff that has been active in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont on some really interesting, challenging and rewarding projects.  The largest, and most prominent among them being a key member of the design team for the replacement of the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge between Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME, and the replacement of 4 bridges on I-91 in Brattleboro, VT.

Professional Activities

Maine Better Transportation Association – Member of Board and Two Terms as President, Member Maine ITE, Member ASCE, Member ACEC Maine’s Transportation Liaison Committee, Member ACEC/Vermont’s VTrans Liaison Committee.
Guest lecturer at UMaine a couple of times discussing what it means to pursue a career in consulting engineering.
Co-presenter on the topic of traffic signal systems operations for the benefit of the NHDOT and VTrans.

Funny Stories

Humor is something that I feel is essential to managing a successful consulting engineering practice.  The work is often demanding and usually accompanied by a fair amount of pressure, so I have always used humor to help manage the stress levels on a daily basis.

Most Rewarding Career Moment

I have had many, but probably the ones that stand out the most are the opportunities I have had to collaborate with a number of the “giants” in the transportation engineering community, especially in the complex bridge field.  T. Y. Lin was indeed amazing on the design of the Casco Bay Bridge, and Linda Figg has become a true friend after working together on a number of projects here in the northeast in recent years.

Hobbies

An avid Boston sports fan.  Love spending time with my grandchildren, and hanging out with my two golden retrievers.  Also, enjoy spending summers at my camp on Sebec Lake in Dover-Foxcroft, ME.
