Engineering Career
I became a structural engineer because of my father, who was a house builder. I was exposed to construction at a very early age, and later worked on houses on a part time basis, and enjoyed the process of framing a building. When I got to college, I just naturally followed the path into structural engineering.
As a structural engineer, working with architects and the engineers in other disciplines, I became experienced with the many details needed to be addressed while designing a building. I then transitioned to construction management, first representing the project owner, and then transitioning to working for the project owner, as a contractor.
Currently I work for a general contractor providing pre-construction services, working with an owner to understand his or her needs, developing a scope of work to meet those needs, establishing the budget, and ultimately the final contract amount for the project.
My early experience as a structural engineer has served me well over all these years, as the emphasis on the details required to make a building stand up, has carried over to being able to understand the importance of defining all the details required for a successful building project.
