Engineering Career
My father was as earthwork superintendent. Was working For Eastern Maine Development Corporation – Bangor (1979-1985) writing grants and assisting with administration on public works projects; and concluded I didn’t like the grant writing and enjoyed the construction administration.
Colwell Construction – 6/86 thru 10/91 – estimating and project management – buildings, bridges, and industrial services.
Unemployed/ underemployed – 11/91 – 5/92
HNTB Corporation – 6/92 thru 9/16 – full time field engineering and inspection through 1999; in 1999 moved into office as senior staff engineer developing plans and specs for MTA paving, MTA building and MTA/MDOT bridge repair projects; served as the Resident Engineer, overseeing MTA and other HNTB inspectors on MTA projects; heavily involved in maintenance of traffic design and implementation.
Retired 9/16 – occasionally worked for HNTB on a part time basis through 1/20.
Professional Activities
ASCE – Maine Section; stepped off the officer climb after serving as Treasurer.
Funny Stories
In 2014 or 2015 presented an in-office seminar on “Oh s*** moments of being a field engineer” which included one afternoon checking a two span bridge that was on temporary supports and discovering it had started to rotate off its temporary bearings (the contractor responded immediately); towing disabled vehicles out of the passing lane in a work zone with my work truck to ease traffic backups (waiting for a wrecker wasn’t a good option)
Most Rewarding Career Moment
I was generally regarded as the go to person at HNTB to deal with MTA bridge maintenance issues requiring immediate engineering input.
Awards
Received ASCE – Maine Section Citizen Engineer Award several years back.
Hobbies
I play with antique trucks – I currently own six; five which run. Enjoy carpentry projects.
