ASCE COPRI Seattle Chapter Meeting

UPDATE - We are opting to move our COPRI meeting to Thursday April 20th to remove a conflict with the joint session dinner meeting with ASCE/SEAW at the Museum of Flight on Wednesday April 19th. For those of you who purchased tickets for the 19th, your tickets will be honored for the 20th. If you purchased Zoom tickets, please email us using the contact information at the bottom of this email and we'll provide an updated Zoom link. The COPRI Seattle Chapter is excited to announce the upcoming monthly technical presentation and social event. We are pleased to welcome Frank Yang, P.E., M. ASCE, Senior Marine Structural Engineer, Moffatt & Nichol; Jim Parkins, P.E., M. ASCE, Vice President and Director of Marketing, Concrete Technology Corporation as the speakers for our April meeting. Frank and Jim will provide an overview on the design and construction considerations of large floating structures such as wave attenuators, ferry and cruise ship terminals, and other passenger or vehicle platforms. The presentation will preview information being prepared for a future ASCE Manual of Practice on Large Floating Structures
 
This will be a hybrid event with a dinner and presentation at Ivar's Salmon House by Lake Union.  Beer and wine will be available for purchase at the event.  The presentation is also available via Zoom (Zoom instructions will be provided thru Brown Paper Ticket purchase through link below).  Event cost is $65 and $5 for in-person and Zoom participants, respectively. Topic:
Design and Construction of Large Floating Structures

This presentation will provide an overview of the design and construction considerations of large floating structures such as wave attenuators, ferry and cruise ship terminals, and other passenger or vehicle platforms. Discussions will include float stability and characteristics, lateral support considerations, as well as construction means and methods and quality control provisions. The presentation will preview information being prepared for a future ASCE Manual of Practice on Large Floating Structures.  Topics will include:

  • The use of large floating structures such as bridges, marine terminals, ferry docks. 
  • Environmental considerations and feasibility including bathymetry and tidal variation, hydrostatic, wind and wave pressures on hulls, and towing loads.
  • Pontoon and support design considerations, lateral supports such as guide pile dolphins, anchor chains, and float-to-shore connections.
  • Fabrication and construction considerations including fabrication facilities and quality.
