TOPIC:  Engineering Safe Water at Scale: Lessons From the Field and the Gaps That Still Remain

Working in last-mile communities and disaster situations around the world, Water Mission applies rigorous engineering, innovative technologies, and community-centered design to deliver reliable safe water systems. Drawing on field experience, George Greene will share lessons learned in system design, scalability, and long-term operation, while also addressing persistent gaps such as sustainability, local capacity, and the need for continued technical innovation to reach the millions still without safe water.

Speaker(s)

George Greene IV, PE

As the Chief Executive Officer and President, George Greene IV, PE, works with the Board of Directors to set and direct strategy. He is responsible for overseeing the financial health of the organization and ensuring projects are executed in accordance with Water Mission’s values of Love, Excellence and Integrity. Mr. Greene is also responsible for developing key strategic partnerships with other international organizations. Under his leadership, the ministry has experienced significant growth.

Mr. Greene joined Water Mission at its founding in 2001 as a project engineer. At the time, Water Mission had two employees (Mr. Greene being one of the two) and two full-time volunteers (Mr. Greene’s parents and founders of Water Mission). He transitioned to vice president of international programs in 2010. In this role, he led the development and growth of Water Mission’s three programmatic focal areas of responding to disasters, supporting refugees, and long-term community development efforts.

While his work has taken him around the globe, his focus is supporting Water Mission’s country programs. He became president and chief operating officer in 2013 and CEO and president in 2020. Since 2001, Mr. Greene has had the unique opportunity to work through almost every role within Water Mission. This first-hand experience has been instrumental in allowing him to lead the ministry to where it is today.

A licensed professional engineer in South Carolina, Mr. Greene graduated from Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. In 2011, he completed Harvard Business School’s Program for Leadership Development, followed by a work study program with Water Mission’s strategic partner Grundfos at their corporate headquarters in Bjerringbro, Denmark. He is an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, St. Andrews Anglican Church, and the C12 Group, a network of Christian executives working together to integrate faith and business.
