Upstate Branch Monthly Meeting

TOPIC: Subsurface Information Modeling

Subsurface Information Modeling (SIM) is an emerging approach that creates digital models of underground conditions, including utilities, underground storage tanks, voids, and other buried infrastructure. Using advanced geophysical and geospatial technologies, subsurface data are collected and transformed into 2D drawings and 3D models that integrate with BIM and design platforms such as Civil 3D and Revit—often referred to as “Underground BIM.”

This presentation will introduce the process and tools used to develop SIM models, the role of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), and how these models help engineers proactively identify underground conflicts, reduce utility strikes and costly shutdowns, and improve safety, coordination, and decision-making during design and construction.

Speaker(s)

Aaron Goldstein, PG is a geophysicist and technology integration expert with specialties at evaluating subsurface conditions through geophysical and non-destructive techniques. His expertise includes leading geophysical campaigns to characterize the subsurface and innovating new approaches to resolving unknown below-grade conditions. He assists and advises clients to avoid potential geological hazards such as buried debris and unknown buried assets.

As a regional department manager of UES Geophysical Technologies and Virtual Design Consulting (VDC) department, Aaron educates professionals in the AEC industry while managing projects across the country. He frequently assists with 3D Subsurface Information Model (SIM) campaigns, which helps preconstruction and design teams work around existing subsurface utilities and conditions. In addition, Aaron experiments with augmented reality and virtual reality techniques to help visualize and bring the office to the field and vice versa.
