Thursday, November 30, 2017 - 02:00 AM

The University of Dayton Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Mechanics announces a new Distinguished Speaker Series aimed at exploring the connection between civil engineering and the impact the projects we engineers work on have on society. The series will include three unrelated presentations during each of the Fall and Winter semesters. Enrolled sophomore, junior, and senior civil engineering students are required to attend. The Department invites local professionals to attend the presentations and interact with students at the conclusion of the presentations. With limited seating, advance registration is requested. Fall events of the Distinguished Speaker Series will begin at 2 p.m. on select Thursdays and will take place at the H. Troy and Eileen Sears Recital Hall in the Jesse Philips Humanities Center at the University of Dayton.

Speaker(s)

This presentation will share with attendees the story surrounding the expansion of Dayton Children's Hospital with the opening of a new patient tower. The work included the demolition of existing building and utilities, construction of a new Data center and Power Generation plant as well as relocating several hospital units offsite and the construction of a new 260,000 square foot, eight-story patient tower without disruption to hospital operations. Deborah Feldman, president and chief executive officer of Dayton Children's Hospital, will share with the audience the critical needs and services that the new patient tower provides. Jim Albertson, project director with Danis Building Construction, will speak about the construction challenges of the tower while Ben Van De Weghe, chief engineer with Shell + Meyer Associates, will speak about the structural engineering elements.
