Update on Student Competitions and Cr. Caicedo's Research Non-wearable Gait Tracking through Floor Vibrations

The University of South Carolina's ASCE Student Chapter will give an update on ongoing/upcoming events, including the progress for the upcoming symposium in North Carolina, how the new elected leaders plan to advance the student chapter, as well as will call for donations.

After the ASCE Student Update, Dr. Juan Caicedo will present on a noel application in structural dynamics: using floor vibrations to estimate occupants' gait parameters. We explore how passive structures are transformed into intelligent systems with the potential to provide healthcare systems actionable insights for elderly care, such as changes in activity related to health outcomes. The presentation covers the sensors used, and the cutting-edge analytical techniques developed during this research. Results from lab experiments are presented, showing excellent agreement between gait parameters from wearable devices and those estimated using floor vibrations. The presentation concludes with a discussion on the challenges and opportunities to transform passive civil systems into intelligent infrastructure.

Speaker(s)

Valerie Sims: Current President for ASCE and a Junior pursing a degree in civil engineering. She plans to pursue her interest in geotechnical engineering in graduate school.

Derek Loy: Future President for ASCE and a Senior pursuing a degree in civil engineering. His primary interests are transportation and geotechnical.

Keenan Briggs: Current Vice President for ASCE and a Junior pursing a degree in civil engineering.

Payton Vereen: Future Vice President for ASCE and a Sophomore pursing a degree in civil engineering. His interests are structural and transportation engineering.

Leevi White: Current and Future Treasurer for ASCE and a Sophomore a pursing a degree in civil engineering, with an interest in environmental engineering.

Kathryn Overstreet: Current Secretary for ASCE and a Junior pursing a degree in civil engineering. She is primarily interested in structural and geotechnical disciplines.

Audrey Cobb: Future Secretary for ASCE and a Freshman pursing a degree in civil engineering. She is primarily interested in transportation and structural disciplines.

Maddy Edie: Current Social Media Manager for ASCE and a Senior pursuing a degree in civil engineering. She is primarily interested in structural and site development disciplines.

Emma Gouveia: Future Social Media Manager for ASCE and a Sophomore pursuing a degree in civil engineering. She is primarily interested in structural and transportation disciplines.

Additionally, Dr. Juan M. Caicedo is a professor and the Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Caicedo’s research interests are on the development of intelligent infrastructure. His work explores making structures “smarter” through the discovery of new knowledge in structural dynamics, uncertainty quantification, and model updating. Dr. Caicedo’s research has been funded by agencies such as the National Institute of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the South Carolina Department of Transportation. As an educator, Dr. Caicedo has developed and taught a range of undergraduate and graduate level courses in civil engineering. In 2022, he received the University of South Carolina’s Garnet Apple Award for Teaching Innovation for his student-center approach to education.
