ASCE Philadelphia SEI/DVGI Joint Technical Meeting: Geotechnical Aspects of Pittsburgh SEA-CAP, the 2022 AASHTO and ASHE National Project of the Year (1 PDH)
The I-579 Urban Open Space Cap Project, a new, three acre green space, reconnected Pittsburgh's historic Hill District with the city's downtown business and cultural center. This first-of-its-kind project sought to remedy historical development that harmed the Hill District by reconnecting this neighborhood through a unique land bridge spanning over the interstate. The foundations for this bridge consisted of 42 drilled shafts at the piers, and 220 micropiles (tension and compression) at the abutments. The presentation covers the design, construction, and testing of these elements and the lessons learned in the project. The $30 million Cap project has received 15 national awards, including the prestigious AASHTO and ASHE National Project of the Year Awards.
