Distinguished Members

Distinguished Membership is the highest honor ASCE can bestow, second only to the title of ASCE President. It is highly selective and reserved for civil engineers who are either ASCE Members or Fellows. One national class of recipients is formally inducted each year. The Mohawk-Hudson Section is honored to have the following of its members selected and recognized as Distinguished Members.

Sreenivas Alampalli, Ph.D., P.E., MBA, Dist. M. ASCE was inducted as a Distinguished Member in 2023 for his nationally recognized subject matter expertise in using data driven decision making to maintain and improve infrastructure. In addition to his previous work leading NYSDOT’s Structures Management Bureau, he has successfully managed more than 100 research projects and authored more than 250 technical publications, including 6 books related to infrastructure.

Francis E. Griggs, Jr., D.Eng., P.E., L.S., Dist. M. ASCE was formally inducted as a Distinguished Member in October 2011 for his specialized work in the restoration of historic bridges, including many 19th-century cast and wrought iron bridges. He was formerly director of historic bridge programs at CHA and has authored numerous scholarly articles on the history of bridges and their engineers, especially those in New York State.  

Col Stephen J. Ressler, Ph.D, P.E., Dist. M. ASCE is recognized for the advancement of engineering education and outreach through innovative use of information technology tools, and through the promotion of teaching improvement among civil engineering faculty. As a faculty member at the U.S. Military Academy, Colonel Ressler conceived and developed computer software which evolved into, and formed the basis for, the West Point Bridge Design Contest. Col Ressler was inducted as a Distinguished Member in 2005.

David T. Biggs, P.E., S.E., Dist. M.ASCE is recognized for his advancement of structural masonry engineering through innovative code development and engineering design and restoration, and the sharing of this knowledge through service and contributions to the public. Mr. Biggs has made major contributions to codes, standards and guidelines in the area of masonry design and construction. Mr. Biggs was inducted as a Distinguished Member in 2005.
