SEI December 2021 Meeting - CN Rainy Lake Bridge Rehabilitation (1 PDH)
Constructed in 1913, Canadian National’s bascule bridge located near Fort Frances, ON is an excellent example of an early Strauss Overhead Counterweight structure. After 100 years in service, the bridge was noted to be experiencing wear between two critical elements – the counterweight post and the lifting truss. Condition inspection of the structure accompanied with a LIDAR 3D survey of the bridge indicated that the wear being experienced was a result of wear within the counterweight trunnion bushings. Tasked with the rehabilitation design, AECOM developed plans for replacement of the counterweight trunnion bushings as well as means for supporting the 1,100 kip counterweight while the counterweight bushings were replaced. Located on an island which is only accessible by rail, the remote location of this structure presented logistical challenges for access in addition to limited laydown area.
