"Energy Goals" Education Requirement for Professional License Renewal

In 2020, the General Assembly passed Act 178, which requires certain professionals licensed by OPR to complete an education module related to the State’s energy goals as a condition of license renewal. This requirement took effect on July 1, 2021 and applies to: (1) architects, (2) landscape architects, (3) pollution abatement facility operators, (4) water system designers, (5) professional engineers, (6) property inspectors, (7) real estate appraisers, and (8) real estate brokers and salespersons. The law also applies to some Vermonters licensed by other State agencies, such as the Department of Public Safety.

You can read the requirements here: https://legislature.vermont.gov/statutes/section/03/005/00138

In short, ahead of the July 31, 2024 biennial renewal, professional engineers in Vermont need to complete two hours of education regarding the State’s energy goals and any updates regarding corresponding State energy programs applicable to the profession.

There are various on-line courses that are marketed as meeting this requirement. We are seeking input from anyone that has completed the education requirement and/or has suggestions on courses that may be applicable. Please reach out to Matt Estabrooks ([email protected]) with your feedback.
