021125 CSCE Dinner Meeting at UNH
Please join CSCE at its monthly dinner meeting at the University of New Haven on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. This meeting is co-sponsored by the CT Chapter of the ASCE Environmental & Water Resources Institute and the ASCE Student Chapter at UNH and will feature a presentation on the Pittsfield, MA, Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade to Ballasted Flocculation Process for Phosphorus Removal by Pamela Westgate, P.E., of Kleinfelder. Attendees may earn 1 NYS PDH at this event.
The 17 MGD Pittsfield, MA WWTP was upgraded to include North America’s Largest CoMag Ballasted Flocculation Process at a municipal Water Resources Recovery Facilities for Total Phosphorous (TP) removal. The system, which was designed to achieve limits for TP of 0.1 mg/L and aluminum of 0.171 mg/L, was commissioned in fall 2021. In addition to the construction of the tertiary treatment process in a new building, the upgrade at the WWTP included: Conversion of the secondary treatment process into a Ludzack-Ettinger process, conversion of one of the trickling filters into a wet weather tank, and construction of new sludge handling facilities. The presentation will include design details on the water treatment technology selection and process design, construction details like the building pile support system, squircle-shape tank construction, and sequencing of the process to maintain operations of the plant.
Pamela Westgate, P.E. (MA) - As a Principal Engineer, Ms. Westgate works with municipalities to address their engineering needs, with a focus on wastewater treatment and capital planning. Her work includes planning and design services. facilities evaluations, feasibility studies, alternatives analyses, process optimization evaluations, pilot testing, and design, bidding, and construction engineering services. She always seeks to maximize the value for clients and has successfully obtained millions of dollars in state and federal grants, plus other financing, for projects. Ms. Westgate works collaboratively with clients to find the best solutions for their individual needs.
