101823 CSCE Monthly Dinner Meeting at Quinnipiac University
Please join CSCE at our monthly meeting at Quinnipiac University, on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. At this meeting, David Jacobs, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor at the University of Hartford and 2019 Benjamin Wright Award Winner, will give a presentation on the Challenges for Achieving High Speed Rail in the United States. This meeting is co-sponsored by the CT Chapter of the ASCE Construction Institute and the ASCE Student Chapter at Quinnipiac University.
We’ve all heard of the famous bullet trains in Japan, and the reliable, luxurious high speed passenger trains in China and Western Europe. So, naturally we in the United States wonder, and always ask: Why can’t our country have high speed train service like that? That is a legitimate question! At this meeting, David Jacobs will explore the financial, political, social, historical, technical, and other challenges with achieving high speed rail in our country.
Attendees may earn 1 New York State Professional Development Hour (NYS PDH) at this event.
David Jacobs is a veteran, an engineer and an adjunct faculty member in civil engineering at the University of Hartford. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1968-1971, in the Navy Reserve from 1971-1993, and retired as a Captain. He studied Civil (Structural) Engineering at the University of Rhode Island, where he earned a B.S., before getting a Masters in Industrial Management & Engineering from Columbia University, a Masters in Transportation Planning & Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of New York and a Ph.D. in Civil (Structural) Engineering from the University of Connecticut. From 1967-2008, he worked for the New York Central, Penn Central, Conrail and Metro-North Railroads on projects involving bridges, tunnels, interlockings, catenary, signals and communications.
