Please join CSCE for a webinar on ethics by David T. Williams, Ph.D., P.E., PH, CFM, CPESC, F.ASCE, F.EWRI, BC.WRE, at 12 p.m. EST on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. This webinar is 90 minutes long. People may earn 1.5 NYS PDHs at this event.

Every day, professionals face decisions that have ethical implications. And while the safety of the organization and the public is every professional’s primary concern, time, personal, and resource pressures can often challenge these commitments. Taking a proactive approach to workplace ethics is the best course to mitigate these risks, avoid legal implications, and build a working atmosphere of integrity, trust, and purpose. In this webinar, we will discuss how to develop a strong and sustainable set of workplace ethics and guidelines designed to mitigate ethics creep, avoid legal implications, and build a solid, ethical foundation for a healthy workplace culture. We will explore common ethical topics and challenges and will detail the best practices when faced with ethically challenging situations. Additionally, we will discuss the difference between a Code of Conduct and a Code of Ethics, and finally, we will review several effective scenarios for academic, private practice and public officials.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
 
  • Explain the pitfalls of ethics creep (slowly eroding your ethics)
  • Determine an ethical path in doing business with others
  • Gain guidance in establishing personal and professional moral compass related to ethics
  • Identify the difference between a code of conduct and a code of ethics
  • Recognize the problems that are presented in ethical challenging situations
  • Determine the course(s) of action for ethical dilemmas by asking certain questions posed in this presentation

David is President of David T. Williams and Associates in the Denver, Colorado area. He is a Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in 10 states, a Certified Professional Hydrologist (PH), a Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM), a certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), a Life member and Fellow of ASCE, and Fellow of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of ASCE. With over 100 publications in journals and conference proceedings, his education includes a PhD in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University and a BS and MS in Civil Engineering, both from the University of California, Davis. His work history includes National Technical Director for Water Resources, PBS&J (now Atkins); National Director for Hydrology and Hydraulics, HDR Engineering; President and co-founder of WEST Consultants; Engineering and Research Development Center (formerly Waterways Experiment Station), Vicksburg, MS; Acting Chief, Hydrology and Hydraulics Section, Baltimore District Corps of Engineers; Nashville District Corps of Engineers; Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC); and Infantry Platoon Officer and Airborne Combat Engineer Officer, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, NC
 
David’s primary experience and interests are hydrology, hydraulics, fluvial geomorphology, streambank protection, risk and uncertainty, and bridge scour and teaches these topics for such entities as ASCE and numerous other professional organizations. He also gives presentations on How to be an Expert Witness and Professional Ethics.
